Sports Physiotherapy

    • Athletes need tune-ups too.sport injuries

I have been visiting Havelock Physio and Acupuncture since 2004. Just like a car that my mechanic looks after, the girls there look after the tuning of my body. I started Multisport in late 2004 and I am not getting any younger. My body funnily enough breaks down generally once per year. The girls at Havelock Physio and Acupuncture have given me some amazing results. Normally several weeks out from a Triathalon, my joints, muscies or ligaments usually fail, stretch or tighten. A few sessions of Physio and advice on managment, iron out the problem.

Once each Physio session is complete, it’s straight through to acupuncture. This for me seems to help heal the injury immediately and is amazingly relaxing. Without this my treatment would not be complete.

So a HUGE thanks to Havelock Physio for helping me reach my sporting goals and especially my latest achievement at the 2009 Triathalon World Champs in Australia. You are awesome!

sport injuries

Physiotherapists are skilled in all aspects of treatment of tissue injury and recovery. Initial treatment is focused on management of the tissue injury – reducing or preventing  excess swelling and  facilitating healing.  Full recovery involves exercise regimes for optimum rehabilitation eg, for: tendon and muscle strengthening,  flexibility and balance with the priority being able to return to the activities carried out before the injury.

Breathing and Respiratory Disorders

    • I have suffered from fibromyalgia and arthritis for many years with ongoing pain in all my joints particularly in my neck and upper and lower back.

Over the years I have had treatment of different sorts, but my pain has been unrelenting.
When I started to see Beth, she noticed that I had developed a very poor breathing pattern due to the stress and constant pain I was in..

Beth taught me to change my breathing pattern and has also taught me skills to improve relaxation, sleeping and breathing with exercise. These skills have made a huge difference to me in that I now feel empowered to control my pain and stress levels and in doing so, my ongoing pain has settled dramatically.

I would definitely recommend anybody who is suffering with these sort of ongoing problems to see Beth for her advice and breathing and relaxation.

Checklist:

  • Do you suffer from any or some of the following? Shortness of breath/fatigue/sighing and yawning/headaches/panic feelings/racing heart/dizziness/gastric reflux/bloating????

All or any of these symptoms could be caused by poor breathing patterns. One in ten New Zealanders experience some form of breathing disorder or chronic over-breathing. This can produce a range of disturbing symptoms which are difficult to diagnose by the doctor and the patient. Havelock Physiotherapy have always prioritsed analysis and treatment of these. We have recently entered into a specialist interest with “Breathing Works” from Auckland where physiotherapists are trained and certified as Bradcliff practitioners. They have specialised training and support from the Breathing Works team. Beth Averill is a Bradcliff practitioner.

They carry out multi-disciplinary assessments for patients with pain disorders and give recommendations for their ongoing care and management. Havelock Physiotherapy also provides rehabilitation programmes for patients with chronic pain which vary from one-on-one sessions to group classes. The focus can be on musculoskeletal rehabilitation for return to work and sport through to rehabilitation for very debilitated chronic pain patients.

Breast Cancer

    • I was very grateful to be able to take part in the programme and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who has had treatment for breast cancer.

Quite apart from the practical assistance it was great to find someone who understood how I was feeling and to be able to talk.

I found the massage and exercises extremely helpful and it is wonderful to have the mobility in my shoulder and arm almost back to normal in such a short time. I’m now back at the gym enjoying weekly sessions with my personal trainer and I am attending yoga classes again which helps to give me that all important sense of well being.
